Prayers of the People - May 27

Prayers of the People -  last week of Resurrection Season

Wednesday Evening, May 27. Pause at the end of each day. Enjoy communion with the living God: Creator, Redeemer, Holy Spirit. Listen for the voice of God in the scriptures.

Read

Psalm 46 “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”

Judges 20; The battle against Benjamin, after Gibeahn Lords - of the tribe of Benjamin - murder the Levite’s Concubine.

John 21.1-14 ; Breakfast with the Lord. This is the third time Jesus appears to his followers after the Resurrection

Meditate

1. Become aware of God’s presence

2. Review the day with gratitude.

3. Pay attention to your emotions.

4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.

5. Look toward tomorrow.

Pray

Bring your meditations to this time of prayer and let them guide you, or use the prayer we’ve offered here: Lord, hear the prayers of your people.

Lead us, gently Lord, sometimes slowly and sometimes with quickness, we ask - in fervent hope - that you will make the rough places straight and bring us safely home.

And then oh Lord, the prayer’s not done, for we would have our homes returned safely to us as well.

Bring safe homes, safe spaces - to the immigrants shut out by hatred’s gates, to the children trapped in abuse, to the incarcerated who must dream through cages, to everyone in mental and spiritual captivity, longing for the day when all of our bodies will be free.

Lead us, God of our deliverance, into places where stillness no longer feels like poison. Take us to places where we can feel the great river of life - whose streams will bring gladness - enough to make the Ancient of Days marvel at the sight.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Contemplate

In silence

Through scripture - From today’s Psalm

“Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” The Lord of hosts is with us; God is our refuge.”

Seek God’s face

“My heart said - seek God’s face. Lord, your face will I seek” Psalm 27.8

Lord, hear the prayers of your people. Amen
